Botox and Dysport

What is botox and/or dysport and how does it work?

Dr. Zimmerman offers both Botox and Dysport - these neuroblockers temporarily relax the muscles that cause undesirable wrinkles of the forehead, frown area, crows feet, and other areas. Also, these medicines are extremely effective in treating hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating of brow, axilla, or hands.

What’s the difference? Both are Botulin toxin A products. Botox is the more common brand name that we think of but they essentially do the same thing. Botox is created by a company called Allergan (think Brilliant Distinctions Rewards program) whereas Dysport is created by Galderma (think Aspire Rewards).

Where do Botox and Dysport work?

Treatable areas include:

  • Crow’s Feet

  • Forehead Lines

  • Frown Lines (elevens)

  • Eyebrow Drooping

  • Chin Dimples

  • Lines around the mouth

  • Armpits or scalp for excessive sweating

  • Snaryl/Bunny Lines

  • Lips (for those deep pucker lines)

  • Neck bands

Does it hurt?

Most of our patients here at Absolute Face Bar do not require any numbing cream. Patients state that it feels like a “pinch” when they undergo a Botox session in our Cincinnati based clinic.  If you are concerned about discomfort, Dr. Zimmerman may recommend applying a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

How can I save on treatments?

There are 2 major competing companies on the aesthetic market: Allergan Brilliant Distinctions® and Aspire Galderma Rewards®. Each program offers a rewards program as a thank you for loyalty. Customers accumulate rewards points which can then be converted into dollars. $10 for every 100 points can be applied toward treatments.

Please make sure to remind us that you are a rewards points member so that we can get your account pulled up and Dr. Zimmerman can add treatment points to your account. Both are free to enroll in and it’s worthwhile to be members of both programs as they are continuously offering different discounts and specials. The higher your status, the greater your earning potential and the more valuable your rewards.

  • Enroll in the free Brilliant Distinctions® Rewards Program to save on BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.  You earn points on each BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment that you can redeem for savings on future treatments. You can also earn and redeem points on other selected treatments and products (such as Juvederm®, Kybella®, Voluma®, Volbella® and Latisse). When will I see results?

You may begin to notice results within 4-5 days for moderate to severe frown lines with maximum results at 10-14 days with results lasting up to 3-4 months.

When will I need a follow up?

As this treatment is only temporary, Dr. Zimmerman recommends Botox or Dysport every 3-6 months.

Will I be able to receive the Botox / Dysport treatment at the time of my consultation?

You and Dr. Zimmerman will discuss your treatment goals and discuss the timing of your treatment.  For the most part, Botox and Dysport can be done at the same day as the visit if desired but sometimes it is case-by-case. If you are wanting to schedule a same day visit, please clarify when booking your appointment.

What are the common side effects and risks associated with Botox / Dysport?

This list is not meant to be inclusive of all possible risks associated with Botox/Dysport as there are both known and unknown side effects associated with any medication or procedure.

  • Bleeding Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications may increase this risk.  Temporarily discontinuing these medications ten days prior to the Botox®/ Dysport® injection may help decrease these symptoms.

  • Under correction, Over Correction or Facial Asymetry Not enough effect vs. too much effect. If you notice any asymmetry, we ask that you wait 9-14 days and then contact the office for a touch – up.

  • Raised Bumps It is common to have a lightly swollen pinkish bump at the injection site(s) lasting a couple of hours to a few days.

  • Redness/ Swelling/Local Numbness, Rash or Pain at the Injection Site They may be relieved by gently applying ice to the area.

  • Bruising Is possible anytime a needle is injected into the skin. Bruising can last for several hours, days, weeks, months and in very rare cases the effect of bruising can be permanent. The risk of bruising increases with consumption of alcohol within 24 hours of injection.

  • Infection Although unusual, it is possible and additional treatments such as antibiotics may be needed.

  • Allergic Reactions Although rare, allergic reactions have been known to occur.

  • Eyelid Drooping (Ptosis) Very rarely, the Botox®/ Dysport® may cause temporary drooping of the eyelid.  This incidence can be minimized by maintaining an upright position and avoiding the application of pressure on the injected sites post injection.

  • Headaches Although Botox®/ Dysport® can be used as treatment for migraines, a small percentage of patients get a headache from Botox®/ Dysport® that can persist for several days.

  • Flu Like Symptoms or Respiratory Problems Such as Bronchitis or Sinusitis, nausea, dizziness and tightness or irritation of the skin is possible.

  • Nearby Muscle Weakness While local weakness of the injected muscles is desired, weakness of adjacent muscles may occur because of the spread of the toxin leading to double vision, inability to close eyes, difficulty whistling or drinking from a straw.
